Infection Preventionist:
The Infection Preventionist (IP) is responsible for the implementation and support of the hospital’s Infection Control Program. Under the direction of the Infection Control Director and Hospital Epidemiologist, this staff member is responsible for identifying, investigating, monitoring, and reporting healthcare associated infections.
The IP collaborates with teams and departments to create an interdisciplinary approach to Infection Prevention.
Education Required
  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing, Clinical Microbiology, or Public Health program
  • Bachelor’s Health Related degree required, Masters, preferred.
 License/Certifications
  • Licensed/Certified as a professional nurse in New York State, clinical microbiologist or public health professional.
  • Certification in Infection Control preferred (CIC) preferred.
  • If not, CIC certified certification required within 2 years of hire.

  • Three or more years’ experience in hospital nursing, clinical microbiology, or public health setting.
  • Oral and written communication skills including computer skills in Excel are essential.
  • Advanced knowledge of Infection Control practices preferred.
 Responsibilities:
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the organizational infection prevention program.
  • Maintains surveillance of patients with epidemiologically significant organisms.
  • Demonstrates the ability to interpret microbiology reports to identify multi-drug resistant organisms and hospital acquired infections for analysis, determination, and application of control measures.
  • Develop an annual surveillance plan based on the population served, services provided, and analysis of surveillance data.
  • Utilize epidemiological principles to conduct exposure investigations and contact tracing in the event of transmission of a communicable disease.
  • Evaluate and update the surveillance plan as necessary.
  • Maintains daily communication with Nurse Managers and other department managers with regard to patients with communicable diseases/organisms as well as those patients with hospital acquired infections.
  • Communicates directly with Employee Health staff regarding communicable diseases, contact investigations, prophylaxis, and immunization programs.
  • Reports all communicable diseases to local Department of Health in accordance with N.Y.S. Department of Health Regulations.
  • Identifies epidemiological variations in levels of disease and develops appropriate measures for infection prevention and control leading to improved patient care.
  • Participates in environment of care rounding teams.
  • Reviews JC standards for Infection Prevention and monitors compliance with these standards.
  • Provides educational programs in conjunction with Education, Development and Research Department for all personnel relating to infection control policies and procedures. Acts as a “subject matter expert” in Infection Prevention & Control matters.
  • Plans and participates in special studies designed to identify, evaluate, and implement interventions to improve patient care.
  • Submits monthly, quarterly, and annual statistics to key stakeholders as required.
  • Maintains membership on assigned hospital committees, helps to evaluate and assess products for staff and patient use.
  • Demonstrates the ability to implement specific control measures as a result of statistical data analysis.
